This is the second installment supporting this month’s Fit & Happier Blog Theme: Fitness Resolutions.
Last week’s installment linked to a post demonstrating why body weight alone is a poor predictor of a person’s health and fitness. This week, we’ll explore the mounting evidence showing dieting in the form of substantial calorie and food group restrictions for the purpose of shedding body weight not only doesn’t work in the long term but dieters’ risks for Type 2 diabetes and other lifestyle diseases actually increase after each subsequent round of dieting.
Rather than seeing this as calamitous news, we should embrace it as the liberating news it really is. Imagine a world with no dieting or body shaming. In this world, we eat more healthfully and move more so we can have energy, stamina, lower our risks of lifestyle diseases and enjoy a better quality of life. This world is about fitness, not scales and calorie counting, and we accept the size and shape our bodies take as long as we are eating well and exercising often.
